Founded in 1993 in San Cristóbal de las Casas, CELAFIN brings Philosophy for Children to life in Latin America. Inspired by Matthew Lipman & Ann Sharp’s vision, it nurtures young minds, helping them think critically, question deeply, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

CELAFIN believes that philosophy is a living tool that helps children and young people navigate the world with curiosity, independence, and creativity.

Through communities of inquiry and discussion, children and educators explore ideas that promote the development of critical creative and caring thinking. Equipping them with the tools to develop their own intelligent and meaningful life project.

Led by Dr. Eugenio Echeverría, CELAFIN continues to expand Lipman’s and Ann’s legacy:
Creating spaces where philosophy isn’t just studied—it’s practiced & lived.

A lifelong educator and philosopher, Eugenio Echeverría has dedicated his work to bringing Philosophy for Children to Latin America. Studying under Matthew Lipman and Ann Sharp at Montclair University, he became part of the movement that transforms education through dialogue, inquiry, and critical thinking.

Eugenio has spent decades guiding teachers and students toward deeper, more independent thought. From classrooms in Mexico to research in Hawaii. He was the president of the ICPIC (International Council for Philosophical Inquiry with Children), his work continues to promote philosophical thought among younger generations.

He offers a diploma in P4C and an International Congress for Philosophy for Children has been held here since 1993. Ann Sharp attended this Congress until 2010.
